de Rijke / de Rooij
Jeroen de Rijke (born 1970 in Brouwershaven / the Netherlands) and Willem de Rooij (born 1969 in Beverwijk / the Netherlands) joined forces in 1994 to form the Amsterdam artist duo “de Rijke / de Rooij”. Jeroen de Rijke died of cardiac arrest on March 10, 2006 while travelling in Ghana. From 1990 t0 1995 he had studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and from 1997 to 1998 at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.
Since Jeroen de Rijke’s death, Willem de Rooij has continued working artistically on the basis of the duo’s shared principles under the name of “de Rijke / de Rooij”.
The duo’s work is concerned with the connection between images and compositional principles from the history of painting and cinema with the visual worlds generated by the commercial image industry and the formal-aesthetic elements of contemporary art.
