Bernadette Corporation

The artist collective “Bernadette Corporation” was founded in 1994 in New York, and though active in different cities works mainly in New York and Paris. The group of anonymous artists, active in shifting constellations, realises projects in the marginal areas of fashion, activism, and art. Amongst the results of their activities are a fashion label (Bernadette Corporation, 1995-1997), an art magazine (Made in the USA, 1999-2001), and in 2005 a collectively written novel Reena Spaulings. Their installations and videos have been shown in several international exhibitions, for example in Rotterdam, Hamburg, Paris, and Berlin.

Matthew Buckingham

Matthew Buckingham was born in 1963 in Nevada/Iowa. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Iowa, as well as in New York. One of his numerous scholarship grants brought him to Berlin.
The recipient of several awards, his works probe into how history is formed, how it is conveyed to us in images and texts, and its contemporary narrative forms. In numerous film projects and video installations he has pursued these issues using historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Charles Darwin, and Edgar Allan Poe. With projects employing photography, film, video, sound recordings, texts, and drawings, he examines the role played by social memory in contemporary life. Matthew Buckingham’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions in Milwaukee, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Rio de Janeiro, Vancouver, Dallas, New York, Münster, St Louis, and Vienna. He works and lives in New York.

de Rijke / de Rooij

Jeroen de Rijke (born 1970 in Brouwershaven / the Netherlands) and Willem de Rooij (born 1969 in Beverwijk / the Netherlands) joined forces in 1994 to form the Amsterdam artist duo “de Rijke / de Rooij”. Jeroen de Rijke died of cardiac arrest on March 10, 2006 while travelling in Ghana. From 1990 t0 1995 he had studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and from 1997 to 1998 at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.
Since Jeroen de Rijke’s death, Willem de Rooij has continued working artistically on the basis of the duo’s shared principles under the name of “de Rijke / de Rooij”.
The duo’s work is concerned with the connection between images and compositional principles from the history of painting and cinema with the visual worlds generated by the commercial image industry and the formal-aesthetic elements of contemporary art.

Judith Hopf

Judith Hopf was born in 1969 in Karlsruhe. From 1990 to 1992 she studied sculpture and painting at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Bremen and from 1993 to 1997 art at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. She works with the media of video, film, drawing, performance, and installation to examine seemingly self-evident communication forms, querying the methods of political and artistic mediation, not just in her works but also in theoretical texts. From 2003 to 2005 she was a member of the video group “Team Ping Pong”.
Between 2001 and 2003 Judith Hopf was visiting lecturer at the Merz Academy Stuttgart, and from 2003 to 2005 visiting professor for sculpture and video art at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee.
Judith Hopf lives in Berlin and her work has been shown in numerous international solo and group exhibitions.

Igor Krenz

Igor Krenz, who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, queries reality with the help of video. Krenz challenges the viewer to ask such questions like “what is real?” and “how can we create our own reality?” He is a member of the Polish artist group “Azorro” founded in 2001. The group works on themes like “the rituals and framework conditions of the art business” and “the entelechy of communication”, utilizing film productions which subtly and amusingly reveal stereotypes of “postmodernism”.

Jonathan Monk

Jonathan Monk was born in 1969 in Leicester/England. From 1988 to 1991 he studied at the Glasgow School of Arts. He has lived and worked in Berlin since 1999. Focusing on art about art, his works are concerned with the claims of autonomy raised by the conceptual and minimalist art of the 1960s and 1970s. In the process he uses a diverse array of media, such as photography, film, video, performance, installations, but also sculpture and painting.
His work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions, including Paris, New York, Amsterdam, Berlin, and London.

Wilhelm Sasnal

Wilhelm Sasnal was born in 1972 in Tarnów. After studying architecture and painting at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts, he has now returned to his hometown to live and work. Upon completing his studies, together with the artist group “Ładnie” (“cute”) he concentrated on directly capturing everyday objects or clichés in painting (1996-2000). This pop stance also resulted in the comic “Życie codzienne w Polsce w latach 1999-2001” (“Everyday Life in Poland, 1999-2001”), in which Sasnal captures his own life in a few lines. The works of the artist group as well as the comic book attempt to generate new images which are capable of adequately portraying a Polish society that underwent rapid change in the 1990s. Most recently, Sasnal has turned to other themes, such as the discussion of Polish attitudes during the Holocaust, the artist generation of the 1970s, or the music of independent bands.
For his visual material Sasnal draws on numerous sources like science, school and children’s books, magazines or television, and uses a video recorder and camera to register his journeys and the day-to-day environment in Tarnów.
In 2002 his works were shown in the exhibitions “Urgent Painting” (Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris 2002), “Painting on the Move” (Kunsthalle Basel 2002), and as an insert in the MUHKA collection holdings (Antwerp 2003). In 2003 he had his first solo exhibition, parallel in the Kunsthalle Zurich and the Westfälischer Kunstverein Münster.

Artur Żmijewski

Artur Żmijewski was born in 1966 in Warsaw. From 1990 to 1995 he studied at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts with Professor Grzegorz Kowalski. Artur Żmijewski works mainly with the media of photography, video, and action performances. His works look at the banalities and extreme marginal phenomena of everyday life, turning them into a subject of discussion – in part through drastic representation. He repeatedly questions what is purportedly “normal” through artistic means. Another aspect of his work is a concern for human disabilities and how they are perceived.
Artur Żmijewski has been invited to take part in the documenta 2007 as a participating artist. He has already had solo exhibitions in Leipzig, Słupsk, London, Düsseldorf, Helsinki, and Basel.
