Szydłowski, Bartosz
Bartosz Szydłowski was born in 1968 in Wrocław. He studied film at Kraków’s Jagiellonian University and stage direction at Krakow’s State Theatre School. In 1997 he made his directorial debut with Ramón María del Valle-Inclán’s play “Divine Words” at the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Kraków.
In 1996 he founded the Kraków theatre association “Łaźnia”, an independent stage that, from the outset, worked in interdisciplinary ways, e.g., by supporting social and educational projects. Moreover, it applied itself to the cultural revitalisation of Kraków’s Kazimierz district. In 2005 the theatre moved to Nowa Huta – a borough of Kraków that developed as a socialist planned city after 1949 – and assumed the name “Łaźnia Nowa”.
Bartosz Szydłowski’s directorial work at “Łaźnia” includes: 1999 “Herr Paul” by Tankred Dorst, 2000 “Zabawa” [“Fun”] by Sławomir Mrożek, 2001 “Phaedra’s Love” by Sarah Kane, 2002 “Tätowierung” [“Tattoo”] by Dea Loher, 2003 “Wścieklizna show” [“Rabies Show”] and “Pokolenie Porno” [“Generation Porn”] by Paweł Jurek.
In addition, Bartosz Szydłowski is artistic director of the international festival “Genius Loci”.
